This impact footprint is now significantly increased through a renewed co-operation agreement with the African Seed Group (ASG).
A seed donation to the value of R2,4 million will ensure that the recipients of assistance, in the form of maize meal, will now also be empowered with a seed donation. About 50 tons of seed (white and yellow maize) were made available by ASG and are distributed in packets of 1 and 2 kg respectively.
According to Mihan Louw, Director of ASG, the co-operation agreement stems from the good business relationship that exists between ASG and Senwes. "Through this donation, we aim to empower the recipients of humanitarian relief to become food producers themselves," Louw explains, adding that the hope exists that this initiative will lead to vulnerable South Africans being able to experience a greater degree of food security.
The ASG is committed to the development and empowerment of small and subsistence farmers across the country.
More about the AVC Relief Umbrella Project
During the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the project, in collaboration with the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz), helped ensure that the basic food needs of vulnerable communities across the country were met.
Since the establishment of the project in May 2020, Senwes producers together with corporate partners have donated almost 1 000 tons of maize, which in processed format, represents more than 33 400 5kg bags of maize flour.
Hope and assistance
"The value of an umbrella project like this is that it not only offers a solution to individuals and communities who are suffering under difficult circumstances, but also provides peace of mind to donors and partners," says Strydom. He adds that Senwes, as an established and accountable agri-business, has the interests of the agricultural value chain at heart for 112 years and would also like to thank everyone who has already contributed to the project.
The project continues unabated and producers can make donations by delivering maize to any Senwes Silo on delivery number 418688. Donations in the form of other commodities can be communicated through Senwes' website at www.senwes.co.za/avc-food-umbrella, after which a representative of Senwes will be in contact with the donors.
